About the author

Joseph Porter has decades of experience as a lawyer, public policy-maker, and academic lecturer. His professional career has been focused on improving the quality of public education in New York as well as expanding affordable learning opportunities nationally.

As a lifelong Christian, Porter has an abiding faith in the transformative power of Christ’s love to open hearts, improve communities, and expand the horizons of human potential. This is his first foray into devotional writing.

Praise for Hope for a Faithful Sinner

Coming from the classic Anglican/Episcopal tradition of apologetics and pastoral practices like prayer, self-reflection, and lived theology, the author speaks from a career as a university lawyer, public policy-maker, and statehouse liaison; and from a life as a son, brother, husband, and friend. Like the author of the psalms, Porter puts the spotlight on the Source of all that is. This offering—a revelation of one life shared for many—will at once surprise, delight, and stir; it is a bold reflection, coming to us just in time.”

— THE REV. RICHARD A. BURNETT, General Secretary, Colleges & Universities of the Anglican Communion

Joseph Porter has delivered a fine book! Sensitive, practical advice for those embarking on their spiritual journeys, from a sinner saved by grace. Rooted in the Bible and the various rich traditions of Christian thought and experience, this little book is loaded with sparkling gems of wisdom. I particularly appreciate the solid but gentle emphasis on Christian virtue ethics, which is at the heart of the Bible’s message on how to live a successful life.”

— GAYNE JOHN ANACKER, Ph.D., Senior Fellow and Chair of the Board, C.S. Lewis Study Center, Northfield, MA

In Hope for a Faithful Sinner, Joe Porter has written a valuable layperson’s guide to spirituality, a series of reflections on ways to appreciate life’s gifts and navigate its challenges through daily prayer and closer communion with God. It is an impressive primer on faith, movingly drawn from Porter’s life experiences.”

— THOMAS TOCH, Research Professor of the Practice, McCourt School of Public Policy, and Director, FutureEd, Georgetown University

Joseph Porter has written a sincere and deep reflection on his spiritual journey and those of others. Through the telling of personal stories and offering powerful quotes from theologians, philosophers, novelists, and others, Porter invites us to reflect on our own spiritual journeys. He sees faith formation as a life-long adventure with the Living God.”

— THE RT. REV. DOUGLAS FISHER, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts
